Our Company
Our Story
Founded by Ivan and Coral Butler in 1975, the early days were challenging times for the family, which included four young children.
Ivan decided to embark on starting a new profession, while also working as a motor mechanic. Ivan decided that if he was to do this, he would have to do it right. It led Ivan to discovering there were limited appropriate educational opportunities available in Australia in the early 1970’s. Therefore, he applied to several funeral homes in the United States, eventually obtaining a student position with Feeney Kirby Funeral Homes whilst studying at the Indiana College of Mortuary Science in Indianapolis.
In 1972, at the age of 40, Ivan ventured abroad for 15 months, leaving Coral and four children behind to fulfil his dream and vision.
In College, he studied the many aspects of Funeral Management, in particular the art and science of embalming, with high reference to anatomical reconstruction, areas in which he received high merit and awards of recognition for his outstanding achievements.
Following graduation from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science, Ivan finally returned home. He designed, built and founded the family company, and on the 27th of June 1975, he conducted his very first funeral at the Enfield Crematorium.
Since Ivan’s retirement in July 1992, the family company has been under the guidance of Ivan’s son, Michael and his wife Rachel, with third generation and grandson Thomas, also working in the family business.
Ivan passed away in 2013, and as a highly respected family-owned South Australian company, our business is built on a foundation of caring and tradition. It’s a family legacy that we as family embrace today.
Enjoying a trusted reputation, the Butler family addresses their client’s personal needs with a focus on satisfying the wishes of loved ones and their families with warmth and understanding.
